On the Road: 2004

The first week of December we took a trip to finish up our goal for the year of celebrating the grand children's birthdays. On the trip we dressed up. My husband wore his casual Santa cloths and I wore my Mrs. Santa dress and hat. Oh dear, does that mean they are my casual Mrs. Santa cloths, also. Oh dear!
It was fun to see people's reactions at service stations and in eating places. Coming home we just dressed regular, but the reactions were pretty much the same. Some said nothing, even went out of their way not to look. Some seemed like they had uncovered a secret: "Did you know you could be Santa?"

I found that I was not exempt. People assumed, even when not dressed up, that I was Mrs. Santa. It must seem natural because one oft said statement was, "Did you know you could play Mrs. Santa? Your hair and your face are made for it! "?" We went into a truck stop, in full casual dress to eat. We sat at the counter. No one said anything. Then a waitress across the room turned a customer around and told him to look. He did. Her reaction was cute. We were encouraged, when we left there, to be careful on the roads which were slippery. It would not do for something to happen to Mr. and Mrs. Santa. It would be too traumatic.

It was fun to see the grandchildren's reaction when we reached our destination. We played with that for awhile. On the way home we ate at Denny's, dressed in regular cloths. As we paid our bill the manager told us he had told his customers that Mr. and Mrs. Santa ate at his store. We wished him Merry Christmas.
